The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics FMI was established in the autumn of 1889 as Physics and Mathematics section at the first Higher Education School in Bulgaria – now known as Sofia University. It was at that time that the degree programs in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry were included in it, and, somewhat later – a degree program in Natural Sciences was added. Presently the number of fulltime students in the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics is about 2 300 distributed in the following main streams: bachelor, master and doctoral degree program in Mathematics, Informatics, Computer Science, High School Teachers in Mathematics and Informatics, Applied Mathematics, Software Engineering and Information Systems. The training is performed in 14 departments by lecturers of considerable experience and international scientific authority. Many of them have taught at renowned universities in the USA, Canada, and Western Europe and participate in different international scientific forums and symposia. This accounts for the high quality of the teaching process at the FMI proof of which is the performance of its students at international competitions in mathematics and informatics.
